Episode 3: Why Gym Inductions Matter (And Why You Shouldn't Skip Them)

Episode Overview

In this episode, I discuss the importance of gym inductions, especially for neurodivergent individuals or anyone who feels traditional fitness spaces weren't designed for them. Drawing from my personal experience as both a late-diagnosed autistic/ADHD personal trainer and former gym newcomer, I explain why inductions can be the foundation of your fitness journey. Listen to it where ever you listen to your podcasts or click here to watch it on YouTube.

Key Points

  • Different gym policies: Local and boutique gyms often require inductions, while budget chain gyms (JD Gyms, Pure Gym, Gym Group) typically make them optional

  • What actually happens during an induction: It's primarily a tour of the gym - showing you where equipment, bathrooms, lockers, and emergency facilities are located

  • Benefits of inductions:

    • Familiariee yourself with the gym layout before your first workout

    • Learn about gym-specific processes (entry systems, locker usage, class bookings)

    • Meet a staff member who can be a familiar face on future visits

    • Build comfort and confidence in the space

Tips for Nervous Newcomers

  • Before your induction: Contact the gym to ask what to expect, how many people will be there, and what to bring

  • What to wear: Comfortable clothing you can move in - doesn't need to be expensive or color-coordinated

  • What to bring:

    • Water bottle (or keep an empty one in your car)

    • Comfortable trainers (avoid crocs or open-toed shoes for safety)

    • Padlock if you'll use a locker

    • Headphones if you plan to exercise afterward

  • Best timing: Mid-day during weekdays or weekends tend to be quieter than 6-8am or 5-8pm peak hours

My Perspective

"I'm a huge believer that the more time you spend somewhere, the more comfortable it can become. Your comfort zone is like a bubble around you - if we just stay in a safe bubble, we're never actually developing our comfort zone. These small actions and experiences help flex out this comfort zone until it stretches."

Services I Offer

  • In-person personal training in Wolverhampton area (spots available from mid-April)

  • Online coaching for those further away

  • Free resources to help begin your fitness journey

Not So Typical Fitness is about finding strength in who you are, not about fitting in or looking good. Even when the world is not designed for someone like you, you deserve to take up space.
